COVID-19 Information for Families
The Needham Office of Special Education is working collaboratively with school leaders, in and out of the district, to determine the best response to COVID-19 and provide meaningful information to our families and staff. Please see below for relevant Special Education and student service information.

School Closure
The Needham Public Schools are closed through May 4, 2020. 

Transition to Remote Learning
Refer to the 3-29-20 letter from the Executive Director of Special Education for more details
Week of March 30th:
~ Continue with Enrichment Activities and remain engaged with students and families.
~ Prepare for transition to Remote Learning Plan
~ Hold previously schedule IEP meetings via video or phone conference with parental consent
Week of April 6th & April 13th:
~ Begin to provide IEP supports and services within a Remote Learning Environment to the best extent possible:

During school closures, students’ Individual Education Programs (IEPs) will be implemented to the best extent possible within a Remote Learning Environment.  Schools may not be able to provide all services in the same manner they are typically provided. Supports and services will be provided that allow equally effective access and opportunity for remote learning designed to reinforce knowledge and skills as well as to ensure students are provided with the opportunity to work towards IEP goals.   Families will hear directly from their child's special education liaison regarding plans for how and to what extent special education will be implemented.

~ Continue providing IEP supports and services within a Remote Learning Environment to the best extent possible
~ Continue to hold IEP meetings via video or phone conference with parental consent

Evaluations & Eligibility Meetings
Eligibility meetings can be scheduled virtually with parental consent for students whose testing were complete prior to school closing.  All other special education evaluations and eligibility team meetings are on hold during school closures.

Timelines for Special Education
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has provided leniency regarding timelines.  The special education department will make every effort to adhere to timelines within these extraordinary circumstances.
