Welcome to Kindergarten! What an important milestone for your child and you! Needham Schools want to provide a meaningful transition process during which you can get to know your school, and the teachers, staff and principal can get to know your child and you. We hope that the transition programs we offer will provide you with an opportunity to meet key people in your child's school, and to begin to make connections with the greater school community.
Each of our 5 elementary schools has its own kindergarten program.  The program is a half day in length. Both the morning and afternoon sessions are 2-1/2 hours long. Children attend the same session for the entire school year. A fee-based enrichment program (KASE) is available for the other half day;  children may register for two to five days a week.
The kindergarten program is designed to develop the ‚Äúwhole child.‚Ä̬† Therefore, much attention is given to social and emotional development and to the development of good work habits in addition to skills related to all of the learning areas.¬† View the PreK to grade 12 Social and Emotional Learning Standards here. Preliminary information pertaining to kindergarten registration is mailed out to all eligible kindergarten children the first week of January. Families who have recently moved into Needham should contact Penny Belezos in the Office of Student Development¬† to be included on the list to receive this information. The January mailing provides information on the dates for kindergarten orientation and registration at your neighborhood school.
As a reminder, School Committee policy states that children must be five years of age by August 31 in order to enter kindergarten and six years of age by August 31 in order to enter grade one.  There are no exceptions to this policy.
