Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What  is included in a LUNCH (vs a la carte items for sale)

Q: What happens to the money that is collected from the lunch program?
A: The school lunch program is 100% self-sufficient, meaning that it is not supported by the school department budget or tax dollars.  The revenue that is collected from the sale of lunches pays the department's expenses for food, salaries, supplies, and equipment.

Q: Who plans the school lunch menus?
A: The menus are planned by the Director of Nutrition Services, Ruth Griffin, RD and the Nutrition Outreach Coordinator, Jen Tuttelman, RD.

Q: Can schools serve any food they want?
A: The menus must meet the new USDA meal pattern standards, based on the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.  Needham menus voluntarily have met higher nutrition standards than required.

Q: What can I do if my child has a food allergy?
A: Talk to the school nurse first. We get allergy information from the nurses.  Look on our webpage for Food Allergies and read the documents.  You can call Jen Tuttelman, RD at (781) 455-0400 x237 to discuss ingredients in particular menu items.

Q: How can I prepay for my child's lunches?
A: By check or online.  Click on the link, Lunch Payment System, on the sidebar for information about our computerized payment system.

Q: Can I pay on line?
A:  Yes! Online payment is an option. Go to the PayForIt - Online Payments link on the Needham Public Schools website (main page).

Q: How do I set up an account for paying online?
A:  Download instructions for making online payment from the Nutrition Services website page.

Q: How can I find my ID# for making payments online?
A: Log into Powerschool for your child (your parent access) and click on the "Online Payment" tab.  It is a specific 6-digit number for lunch payments.
                                          or
Ask your school secretary to print you an instructional letter from Powerschool with a special DBS (Data Business Systems) student ID number for on-line payment.

Q: If my child is just an occasional lunch buyer, can I still prepay for lunches?
A: Yes. Any prepaid monies into the system will be honored into the next school year.

Q:  Can I see what my child is buying?
A:  Yes. Instructions to view your child's account are on the sidebar of this website:  My Lunch Account Instructions.

A:  Yes. Please click on the link, Nutrition and Wellness, on the sidebar to access the policy.
