Needham Public Schools
Community Volunteer Program
Launched in October 2008, the Needham Public Schools Community Volunteer program offers residents the opportunity to give back to the community in a meaningful way, while engaging with the students, administrators and teachers who make the Needham Public Schools so special. All volunteers are interviewed so that they can be matched with the volunteer opportunity that best suits their interests, skill-set and personality. They receive training from their placement supervisor prior to beginning their placement.
Current volunteer placements include the following:
Needham High School Greeters
Greeters are assigned in pairs to greet visitors at the front entrance of Needham High School, and to direct them to offices. They are the welcoming face of Needham High School.
Needham High School Math Resource Room
Volunteer during school, on Mondays or Tuesdays, in the Math Resource Room. Assist students with math assignments, and tutor students needing extra math help.
Middle School Math/Science Volunteers
Assist middle school students who are either struggling in math or science, or who excel at math/science and would benefit from further enrichment.
Assist teachers in the classroom. Needs vary. Assignments are made based on your skills, your comfort level with the curriculum and subject matter, and your time commitment.
Needham Science Center Volunteers
Volunteers help with various tasks of the Science Center staff as needed, such as repair and maintenance of exhibit and instructional materials, assembling packets to be used in the classroom, working with staff members to present classroom programs, helping with care of animals, sharing their science-related experiences with students and clerical work.
If you have a special volunteer interest that would not be satisfied by one of the opportunities above, the Community Volunteer Director will be happy to find a suitable placement for you elsewhere in the school system.
