Summer Explorations High School Volunteer Program

Registration for the Summer Explorations 2020 High School Volunteer Program will open online at 7:00am on Thursday, February 27th. 


Volunteers no longer need to submit an application to volunteer their time. Simply visit the link below (beginning at 7:00am on Thursday, February 27th) to register for the schedule and location you want. There is no cost associated with registering, however once you have registered you are now committed to volunteer your time with Summer Explorations. Volunteers must commit for a full week, requests to volunteer for partial weeks cannot be accommodated.

About the Summer Explorations High School Volunteer Program

Each year Summer Explorations seeks Needham students in grades 9–11, who enjoy working with children, to serve as Volunteer Teaching Assistants in our program. Summer Explorations is comprised of over 90, half-day enrichment classes, for students entering grades 1–9. Volunteers are paired with an individual class to help out with for the week (one volunteer per class). There are classes in science, sports, cooking, engineering, fine and performing arts, culture and technology. All classes are taught by Needham Public Schools staff members and other trained education professionals. The weeklong classes are offered Monday–Friday, between June 29th and July 24th (no classes 7/3).


Volunteers are needed for 3.25 hours/day, mornings and/or afternoons, for a full week.


Summer Explorations Volunteer Teaching Assistant responsibilities include:

— Assist with student drop-off and pick-up

— Assist class instructor with setting up and cleaning up projects/activities

— Assist participating students with projects/activities/games

— Act as a positive role model for Summer Explorations participants


Summer Explorations Volunteer Teaching Assistant requirements:

— Volunteers must be currently in grades 9–11

— Volunteers must commit to an entire week (requests to volunteer for partial weeks cannot be accommodated)

— Volunteers must enjoy working with young children

— Volunteers may not use smartphones or other devices during volunteering hours

— Volunteers seeking Community Service hours are responsible for the completion of their Community Service Learning paperwork
