Live Animals

Where is Micetro, the Great Horned Owl?
Lucky Micetro is enjoying an extended vacation, at Zooquarium on the Cape.  We don't have a return date for him yet, but we expect him to be here in early 2011 .

NPS teachers can enhance the curriculum with a live animal visit!

The Science Center's animal collection includes:  Mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and other invertebrates .

Short Term Animal Loan (one day up to 2 weeks):

A Science Center staffer will deliver the animal, introduce it to a classroom, and give students ideas for animal-related observations and activities. The staffer will also discuss the animal's habitat and care.

The animal will arrive with a cage, food, bedding, and care instructions. During the length of the stay, students and teachers are responsible for animal care. The Science Center staff will be available to answer questions and concerns. If the animal visit falls over a long weekend or an extended break, the Science Center will help with arrangements for animal care.

Animal Programs

Some grade levels have live animal programs available to add pizzaz to NPS science units!

Current offerings include:
Rodents - mouse, or degu (Grade K)
Hedgehog (Grade K)
Metamorphisis - frog and toad (Grade 2)

Other programs are in development. Details to follow.

Special Visits

Some animals in our collection require special care and cannot be kept overnight in a classroom. Teachers can request that a Science Center staffer bring the animal in for a brief one-hour visit.

Animal visitors include Torte, our yellow-footed tortoise, Micetro, our great horned owl, and Ginger Snap, our snapping turtle.

High school volunteers are encouraged and welcomed during the academic year. Volunteer hours are accumulated and used toward the Community Service graduation requirement. Students learn animal handling and animal care.
